Goondiwindi Region

Situated along the border with New South Wales, the Goondiwindi Region is a Local Government Area in the Darling Downs Region of Queensland, approximately 247 kilometres south-west of Brisbane, the state capital. The LGA is sparsely populated with its estimated population of 11,413 residents over a 19,292.1-square-kilometre area. Its primary industry is agriculture.

The Goondiwindi Region was established in March 2008, following a recommendation in July 2007 by the Local Government Reform Commission, from the merger of the Shires of Inglewood and Waggamba and the Town of Goondiwindi. The LGA consists of the townships of Bungunya, Goondiwindi, Inglewood, Talwood, Texas, Toobeah, and Yelarbon. Its name derives from the Aboriginal word goonawinna, which means "the resting place of birds".

With the town of Goondiwindi as Council Seat, the Goondiwindi Region is represented in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland by the Electoral District of Southern Downs, as well as by the Federal Division of Maranoa in the Australian House of Representatives. It is bordered by the Local Government Areas of Balonne, Southern Downs, Toowoomba, and Western Downs, and the Inverell and Moree Plains LGAs of New South Wales.

The Goondiwindi Region has various cultural, historical, and natural attractions for residents and visitors alike to enjoy. Popular events and sites in the Local Government Area include Boobera Lagoon, Border Bridge, Callandoon Pioneers Cemetery, Customs House Museum, Goondiwindi Botanic Garden of the Western Woodlands, Goondiwindi Hell of the West Triathlon, Goondiwindi Riverwalk, Gourmet in Gundy, Gundy Star Tourist Park, Gunsynd Statue and Museum, Inglewood Heritage Centre, Lake Coolmunda, Macintyre River, Natural Heritage Water Park, and The Billabong on the River.
