Distinguished and Famous people from Goondiwindi
🌟 Bill Bishop and the Gunsynd syndicate
Bill Bishop and his fellow syndicate members put Goondiwindi firmly into Australian racing folklore through Gunsynd, the Goondiwindi Grey. Purchased as a yearling for $1,300 in 1969, the horse went on to win major races, including the 1972 Cox Plate, and finish third in that year’s Melbourne Cup. His name shortened “Goondiwindi syndicate”, preserving the owners’ local association. The story’s human connection is the group behind the horse: local racing enthusiasts whose modest purchase became a champion remembered through the town’s statue and displays.
